Toei Toden Arakawa Line begins operation of special train car No. 8501, renewed by Eiji Mitooka, retro in yamabuki color with wooden interior.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation announced that the renewal of car 8501 of the Tokyo Sakura Tram (Toden Arakawa Line) has been completed, and it will start operation on April 16.

In May 2025, the “TODEN Train Renewal Project” will be launched with the aim of revitalizing the train line. Mr. Eiji Mitooka, an industrial designer, is in charge of the interior and exterior design.

Part of the renovation cost was funded by crowdfunding, a first for the Toei Transit. The exterior (exterior) is mainly “yamabuki” color, reminiscent of the old Toden, and most parts of the interior (interior), such as benches and counter roll blinds, are made of wood. During events, tables for eating and drinking will also be available.

Toei Kotsu and Hato Bus plan a chartered ride tour of the renewed vehicles. The tour will be held on May 30, with two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The cost is 25,000 yen, and applications for participation are being accepted from April 14 (children under elementary school age are not allowed to participate).

The meeting and dismissal point is at the Marunouchi South Exit of Tokyo Station, and the tram ride will be from Arakawa Electric Railway Office to Otsuka Station (turnaround operation) to Minowabashi Bridge. The Hato Bus will be used between Tokyo Station and Otsuka Station/Minowabashi Bridge, and visitors will be able to tour the Arakawa garage, which is not usually open to the public.
