Weekend Ekiben] “Ginger-yaki Bento” at Sakuragi-cho Station

Sakiyo-ken, the absolute king of ekiben in Yokohama, sells a different kind of bento, the “Shoga-yaki Bento” introduced here. What is unusual about this ekiben is that it does not contain shiomai, even though it is a product of Sakiyoken.

Of the more than ten or so types of ekiben that Sakiyo-ken always offers, including regular and seasonal items, the only ones that do not include shaumai are the “Shoga-yaki bento” and “Inari sushi.

Although the “Ginger-yaki Bento” seems to lack such a mainstay, when you try it, you will find that it is quite a competent dish. The ginger yaki, the star of the dish, is seasoned with a mild sweet and spicy flavor, but the taste of ginger can be felt well, and goes well with rice. The meat is also quite tender and easy to eat.

The rice is very tasty, with a strong stickiness and sweetness. Like “shi mai bento,” the rice is divided into 8 pieces in a bale shape, but the stickiness of the rice makes it a little bit difficult to eat. However, the stickiness is also a big part of the deliciousness, so it is OK as a result.

The plums on the rice are crunchy and have a strong sour taste. The potato salad has a firm texture of potato and goes well with the strong mayonnaise flavor. The fried onions are seasoned a little sweetly while fully utilizing the sweetness of the onions. The stir-fried bamboo shoots, takana (Chinese cabbage), and minced chicken has crispy bamboo shoots and the taste of takana is also well utilized.

Before I ate it, I had the impression that it was like a baseball game without an ace or a No. 4 hitter, or a chess game without a flying coach and a square peg. I had some doubts. The price of less than 1,000 yen is also attractive. The price of less than 1,000 yen is also attractive. Although the wrapping paper is not so fancy, I could fully enjoy the taste of the absolute champion of Yokohama.
