JAL Hometown Ambassadors and Supporters] JAL CAs living in Kagawa Prefecture introduce their love for the region! The Shikoku Kompira Kabuki Grand Theater is now underway! Watch out for the performance of the movie “National Treasure!

JAL, which has bases throughout Japan, has been continuously implementing regional revitalization initiatives (currently the “JAL Furusato Project”), and in August 2020 launched the “JAL Furusato Ambassadors,” cabin crew members selected through an in-house recruitment process who move to the area to promote initiatives in their respective regions. In December of the same year, JAL appointed “JAL Hometown Cheering Troops” who are involved in regional revitalization while serving on board. The aim is to develop products and solve regional issues for hometowns and other regions with which they have connections, utilizing the knowledge they have accumulated as flight attendants.

We interviewed Ms. Hiroko Kanekawa, who finished her term as a JAL Furusato Ambassador this March.

–What can you tell us about your initiatives?

Every spring, the town of Kotohira is filled with the splendor of the “Shikoku Kompira Kabuki Grand Theatre” has begun again this year! JAL is also supporting this wonderful event.

As a JAL hometown ambassador for the past two years, I would like to conclude with my heartfelt thanks to all of you.

This year, the performance of “Sagimusume,” which appears in the climax of the popular movie “Kokuhou,” is also attracting a great deal of attention.

–What is the appeal of the Shikoku Kompira Kabuki?

The greatest attraction is the overwhelming sense of realism that only the oldest existing playhouse in Japan, the “Old Konpira Grand Theatre (Kanamaruza),” can provide. The seats are so close to the stage that you can even hear the actors’ breathing.

The “turning stage,” which rotates during scene changes, is operated by human power, and is supported by volunteers from the local Kotohira Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry Youth Club. The warmth and enthusiasm of the local community working together to create this unique event is another reason why it is so moving.

–What is JAL’s unique approach to supporting the “Shikoku Kompira Kabuki Grand Theatre”?

With this in mind, JAL has donated knee pads to the town of Kotohira for use by visitors. The design is based on the “Saeki Tsuru no Maru,” the theater’s crest, and JAL’s “Tsurumaru,” a connection between two cranes.

This year, in addition to these “kneeling bags”, “azuma-bukuro” are also available.

This is a new product planned together with Mr. Atsuhiko Ohno, a traditional craftsman of Kagawa Prefecture (Dyeing Master Yoshinoya). The design is based on the gorgeous “Nobori” banners that decorate the town of Kotohira.

This item allows you to feel the glamour of Kompira Kabuki in your daily life.

–What is your message to travelers?

Many people may have become interested in Kabuki through the movie “National Treasure.

This year’s show runs through April 26. There is still time to join us! We invite you to experience a performance that will thrill your senses, something that can only be experienced at the historic Kanamaruza Theater. We look forward to seeing you there.
