At a press conference held by the president on March 26, JR Tokai unveiled a new image of the “private room type” upper-class seats it plans to introduce on the Tokaido Shinkansen.
In FY2026, the company plans to introduce fully-private seats in some N700S trains (two per train) in the fall, which will be a higher class than the Green Car, and in FY2027, it plans to introduce semi-private seats, also a higher class, and to improve service in the Green Car.
The fully private room type is equipped with a dedicated Wi-Fi environment using AGC’s 5G-compatible transparent glass antenna, a world first for a rail car, and speakers using NTT Group’s patented “PSZ” technology, the first of its kind in Japan for public transportation.
When the speaker is connected wirelessly to a passenger’s smartphone or PC, the sound of video and music will spread only to his or her own ears, allowing the passenger to enjoy the sound without worrying about sound leakage to the surroundings.
The interior is at least two windows wide, and the brightness of the lighting, air conditioning air volume, and broadcast volume can be individually adjusted. The reclining seats are equipped with leg rests. Operating sections and fares will be announced as they become available.
