State of Hawaii, hotel occupancy tax at 11%, green fees introduced in January, how much more than the base rate?

On February 27, the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Japan Branch (HTJ) held a seminar for the media to explain the changes in Hawaii’s lodging tax (introduction of Hawaii’s Green Fee Law).

In 2025, the tax will be increased by 0.75% to pay for global warming, effective January 1, 2026, and now totals 11%. In addition to short-term accommodations such as hotels, condominiums, and vacation rentals, cruise ships are newly subject to the tax based on the number of days they stay in port.

In addition to the base hotel rate, there is a tax of approximately 19% (11% Hawaii state lodging tax, 3% each island lodging tax, and 4.712% Hawaii state sales tax) and a resort fee (several tens of dollars per day for use of facilities).
