The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) held its annual consultation with the French development assistance agency, the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), in Tokyo on November 6. These discussions were conducted in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between JICA and AFD and the “Roadmap for Franco-Japanese Cooperation under the Special Partnership” announced at the December 2023 Japan-France Summit. Through the discussions, JICA and AFD reaffirmed their mutual cooperation and common goals.

From 2019 onwards, AFD and JICA will continue to cooperate on climate change action, natural disaster risk reduction, energy transition, sustainable transport and transportation development, private sector support, health and sanitation, and assistance to vulnerable areas, with a focus on the Indo-Pacific and African regions, in accordance with the Memorandum of Cooperation signed between the two organizations. The two countries continue to cooperate in efforts to combat climate change, reduce natural disaster risks, energy transition, sustainable transportation, private sector support, health, and assistance to vulnerable areas.

During the discussions, the two organizations confirmed the progress of their cooperative achievements in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and other regions, and also confirmed that they will continue to build up concrete cooperation in areas of mutual interest and focus, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region and countries in the Middle East and Europe.

Strengthening Partnerships

This year, in addition to the regular consultations, we visited JICA Tokyo to inspect the ongoing training program in the field of peacebuilding and made a tour of the Center’s premises, providing an overview of JICA’s operations in Japan and its links and features with various partners, and sharing the knowledge of both organizations on organizational strategies and various development issues.

Furthermore, information was shared on events related to the “Development Banking Summit (FiCS)” in conjunction with the G7 Summit to be held in France in 2026. Participation in this event is expected to deepen cooperation between the two institutions in the international arena.

JICA will continue to promote effective collaboration in the transforming field of international development through a strategic partnership based on trust with AFD.
