The Metropolitan Police Department has published forecasts of traffic congestion on public roads in Tokyo during the year-end and New Year period from 2025 to 2026.
Traffic congestion is expected to be concentrated during the year, with many weekday traffic jams on Kanpachi Dori expected to last until December 26, and to be below normal from December 27 onward.
In particular, traffic congestion is expected to lengthen on December 25, with traffic congestion of approximately 7.4 km on Kanpachi-dori (outer loop) starting near Itsukaichi at 17:00, and approximately 10.8 km on Kanpachi-dori (outer loop) starting near Yamato Rikubashi at 18:00.
On days when traffic congestion is forecasted, the company urges drivers to avoid congested times and roads, and to use public transportation. Even in areas where traffic congestion is not forecasted, the city urges caution as localized traffic congestion is possible in the vicinity of facilities that attract visitors.
