With the start of a major holiday weekend, tourist spots throughout Japan are expected to be crowded, and the Hatsu-mode (New Year’s visit) in 2026 is also expected to be crowded, especially in areas with large numbers of visitors.
We have compiled a list of 10 major temples and shrines, including those that open their gates throughout the night from New Year’s Eve to New Year’s Day, and those that have a longer Hatsumode period to disperse the number of visitors.
Some temples and shrines will also provide live broadcasts of their precincts so that you can check how crowded they are in advance. Also, check the extra train and bus schedules.
