Meiji Jingu Shrine, Hatsu-mairi (New Year’s visit) guide for 2026; traffic restrictions around Harajuku Station from 31st to 3rd.

opening time of the gate

December 31, 2025 from 6:40 a.m. to midnight

January 1, 2026, 0:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

January 2-3, 2026 6:40am-6pm each day

January 4, 2026, 6:40 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

After January 5, 2026 6:40 a.m. – 4:20 p.m.

Especially from 10:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve to 3:00 p.m. on New Year’s Day and after 10:00 p.m. on three days of the year, crowds are expected, so we are asking for cooperation in dispersing visits to the temple.

During the Hatsumode (New Year’s visit to the shrine) period, a new hand-watering place with running water will be added, and the awarding offices (for Ofuda, Charms, Omikuji, Goshuin, etc.) will be specially set up in front of Meiji Jingu Hall (in the direction of Harajuku and Yoyogi) and on the west approach lawn (in the direction of Sangubashi) instead of near the main shrine building.

In addition, the Fureai Plaza will be open from December 31, and restaurants and cafes on the grounds will be open from January 1.

Traffic regulations will be enforced around Harajuku Station from December 31 to January 3. For details, please check the official website of the Harajuku Police Station.
