Background and Objectives

As cities develop in Asia, issues such as infrastructure development and resilient urban planning against climate change are becoming more and more apparent. In light of this situation, in April 2025, UN-HABITAT Fukuoka Headquarters established the Platform for Sustainable City Planning in Asia and the Pacific (the “Platform”) as a gathering place for industry, academia, government, and citizen groups interested in promoting sustainable city planning in Asia and the Pacific. JICA has actively participated in the Platform’s activities since its establishment.

Contents

On December 18, 2025, JICA co-hosted the Platform’s 3rd Network Seminar with UN-Habitat and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The seminar was attended by 180 participants from industry, government, academia, and civil society.

The South Asia Regional Overseas Directors’ Meeting, which had long been held only online due to the Corona Disaster, was held in Japan, and the heads of overseas offices from seven countries in the South Asia region gathered in Fukuoka to speak at the JICA South Asia Co-Creation Network session of the seminar. The heads of the seven South Asian countries introduced the latest developments in their countries, the social issues they face, and JICA’s initiatives in the region. The South Asia region is a driving force behind the world’s economic growth, but the countries in the region are at various stages of development and the social issues they face are diverse, complex, and enormous. Each speaker spoke passionately about co-creation, using all the time he or she had, and a lively exchange of ideas took place between the participants and the facilitator, Junko Ota of IGES.

One of JICA’s most important themes in recent years is “Co-creation, Innovation and Circular Flow”. To solve issues in developing countries, we use innovative approaches to build win-win relationships with diverse partners, and together we create and deliver new social value. We will also apply the knowledge gained through international cooperation to solving social issues in Japan. We will further strengthen this cycle to achieve higher development impact.
