First Yen Loan Agreement Signed for Guyana: Contributing to Access to Safe Drinking Water through the Development of Water Treatment Plants and Non-revenue Water Measures | News & PR

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Loan Agreement (L/A) with the Government of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana for the “Water Supply and Sewerage Improvement Project” in Georgetown, the capital of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, on January 22. The Loan Agreement (L/A) was signed between Mr. Ashni Singh, Minister of Finance of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, and Mr. Kota Sakaguchi, Director of JICA’s Dominican Republic Office. This is a co-financing project with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Signing Ceremony

This project is the first yen loan project for the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, and will contribute to strengthening friendly relations between Guyana and Japan through support for the development of “high quality infrastructure” promoted by Japan.

Business Objectives

This project will improve access to safe drinking water in the target area by constructing a water treatment plant, improving the water transmission and distribution pipeline network, and strengthening capacity for non-revenue water measures in the Demerara-Mahaica Region, thereby improving the living environment and contributing to industrial and economic development.

(a) Equipment procurement and civil engineering work

Construction of a new water treatment plant in the Diamond District, improvement of water transmission and distribution pipes, and installation of a photovoltaic power generation system in the water treatment plant. and implementation of non-revenue water control measures in the East Bank of Demerara, East Coast Demerara, and Cummings Lodge Water System areas (network upgrades, leak repairs, and installation of ultrasonic smart meters).

(b) Consulting services

Construction management support, preparation of action plans to reduce non-revenue water ratio, educational activities for residents, etc.

The project is co-financed with the Inter-American Development Bank (expected loan amount: $15.57 million) and will be implemented in close cooperation.
