JR East begins considering a new sightseeing train using a converted C58 steam locomotive. What are the service sections and when will it start?

On December 3, JR East announced that it will begin studying the possibility of a sightseeing train utilizing a C58 steam locomotive, with the aim of starting operation in the spring of 2029 or later. The train will run between Morioka and Ichinoseki on the Tohoku Main Line, and will be operated as a temporary train.

By connecting popular tourist destinations such as the World Heritage site Hiraizumi, the company aims to further revitalize local tourism resources and attract inbound tourists to the Tohoku region.
