The Director of Mangrove Restoration emphasized the importance of mangrove ecosystems in combating climate change and improving the livelihoods of coastal communities, and introduced the current status of mangroves in Indonesia and conservation and restoration efforts. He introduced the objectives and functions of the WMC to share knowledge and experiences of Indonesian and international efforts and to promote international collaboration.
Mr. Randhiny of Sri Lanka expressed his hope that the WMC, as an international center for mangrove conservation, restoration, and research, will contribute to achieving the goals of the UNFCCC and the UNEA recommendations.
Mr. Meunier of GGGI commented on the financial mobilization mechanisms and field activities necessary for the WMC to actually function as an international center for conservation and restoration.
Mr. Sakaguchi emphasized JICA’s long-term cooperation for mangrove conservation in Indonesia, especially the establishment and support of the Bali Mangrove Information Center (MIC), and proposed that the MIC and its surrounding facilities be used to strengthen international capacity for mangrove conservation, restoration, and sustainable management, and as a venue for sharing knowledge and experiences. The MIC and its surrounding facilities will serve as a venue for international capacity building and knowledge and experience sharing for mangrove conservation, restoration, and sustainable management.
