background
JICA has been working on poverty alleviation and regional development through tourism development in the Amasonas region of northern Peru. JICA and the Embassy of Peru in Tokyo recently held an event at the Osaka-Kansai Expo to promote the results of JICA cooperation, the significance of international cooperation, and the attractiveness of tourism in northern Peru.
Details of implementation
On September 5, an explanation and event announcement (about 15 minutes) was held at the Expo Media Center, and on September 6, a closed event for the media (about 1 hour, attended by about 15 media representatives) and an open event for the general public (2 x 1 hour events) were held in the Peru Pavilion.
JICA has supported the implementation of the “Regional Development Project of Amasonas Province,” a yen loan project, and the “Project for the Promotion of Sustainable Development of Cultural Landscapes in the Upper Utcubamba Valley,” a technical cooperation project, in Amasonas Province, northern Peru. Based on Japan’s experience in regional development activities, we have been promoting the preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage and community-based tourism development that utilizes such heritage. Currently, we are considering expanding the results of the cooperation in Amasonas to other provinces in northern Peru.
