Odakyu Corporation and Odakyu Resorts announced that they are promoting a plan to reopen the Hakone Highland Hotel (940 Sengokuhara Ninnoki, Hakone-cho, Ashigarashita-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture), a highland resort owned by Odakyu Corporation, around fall 2027. The previous hotel will cease operations in May 2025, and construction work, including demolition, is scheduled to begin in December.
The renewal concept of the hotel, which has its roots in the villa of a former zaibatsu, is “a villa in the forest surrounded by the great nature of Hakone,” and while making the most of its location on a 13,000 tsubo site with a lawn garden, forest, and a view of the Owakudani ridge line, the existing building will be rebuilt and renovated to provide 65 rooms in total. The site area is 42,052 m2 (unchanged), and the total floor space after renovation is 8,122 m2.
Rooms will be equipped with all-room temperature hot springs, and will be located in two buildings: a guest room building (46 standard rooms of approximately 50 m2 for 2-3 persons and 4 suites of approximately 100 m2 for a maximum of 4 persons) and a forest residence building (15 rooms in total). About half of the guest rooms will have a spectacular view of Owakudani over the lawn garden, while the other half will have a tranquil view facing the forest and a semi-open-air bath.
In December, Odakyu Resorts will open the dog-specific hotel “Retona Hakone” on the shore of nearby Lake Ashinoko, and the “Dog Friendly Rooms” that were previously available will be discontinued.
For meals, the wood-fired grill that was once offered will be revived (approximately 100 seats). In addition, a new sub-dining room (approximately 10 seats) will be established as a high-end sushi restaurant that can be used as a private room, allowing guests to choose between Japanese and Western cuisine.
In addition to the existing Owakudani hot spring (cloudy water), the hotel will offer the newly drilled “Hakone Sengokuhara Ninnoki Hot Spring” (clear water) on the hotel premises. In addition, the facilities of the “hot spring building” will be renovated and private rooms will be provided for use by pairs.
