TOKYO BANANA express, an unmanned Tokyo Banana store on the Tokaido Shinkansen platform at Tokyo Station

JR Tokai Retailing Plus will open an unmanned Tokyo Banana express store near platforms 16 and 17, car 9, at Tokyo Station from April 18.

The unmanned store uses cameras and sensors to identify the products to be purchased, and the purchase is completed when the customer pays at the cash register with the product in his/her hand. Only cashless payment by either transportation-related electronic money, barcode payment, or credit card can be used for purchases.

In addition to the “Tokyo Banana ‘I found it'” (4 or 8 pieces), the store also offers “Tokyo Banana ‘I found it’ Brulee Tart” (4 or 8 pieces) and “Sugar Sand Butter Tree” (10 or 14 pieces), for a total of 3 types and 6 products. By purposely reducing the product lineup, the company aims to make it easier for customers who are in a hurry to use the store.
