YAMAP, a mountaineering map application, fully implements standard course times that allow even beginners to walk without difficulty. Analyzes 800,000 user GPS logs.

Yamap has officially adopted and fully implemented standardized course times from climbers’ GPS logs in its “Yamap” mountaineering map GPS application and web service.

Although the time required to reach a destination is important basic information for climbers, until now there have been no standards or objective indicators for determining course times, so guidebooks and other publications have relied entirely on the experience and subjectivity of their authors and others.

Therefore, we analyzed approximately 800,000 GPS logs of YAMAP users and developed a calculation method to standardize the course time based on the terrain (slope). The calculation formula corresponds to a pace (maximum ascent speed 350 m/h, 6-metres) that allows beginners and people with low physical fitness to walk safely and without strain. Walking according to the “standard course time” will help people to naturally learn how to pace themselves comfortably.
