Emergency Relief Aid for Flood Damage in Libya – Supplies | News / Media

In response to a request from the Libyan government for assistance for flood damage in Libya, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide emergency relief supplies as follows.

Tropical cyclone (Daniel) storms that occurred on September 10-11 caused flooding in eastern Libya, resulting in extensive human and property damage in the affected areas.

Damage as of September 14 (as announced by UN agencies)

Deaths 5,300

Missing persons: more than 10,000

Evacuees 20,000

The northern coastal cities, including the eastern cities of Derna and Albayda, were severely affected by the disaster. More than 1/4 of the urbanized area of Derna was washed away. Two dams were breached, and many public facilities, including medical facilities, administrative and commercial buildings were damaged. Major roads and bridges were washed out or destroyed, and power and water supplies were disrupted.
