The Highway Daishi Bridge, located at the Tama River crossing, has been under construction for more than 50 years and is deteriorating due to heavy traffic volume of 80,000 vehicles per day. As previously reported, a major road closure will be in effect for two weeks from 5:00 a.m. May 27 to 5:00 a.m. June 10 for the Highway Daishi Bridge renewal.
On May 26, Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway held a regular press conference at its headquarters in Kasumigaseki, where President Nobuhiro Maeda explained the closure of the Haneda Line, which will begin tomorrow, May 27.

During the closure period, traffic congestion on the Metropolitan Expressway and surrounding public roads is expected to be heavier than usual. In particular, traffic congestion from Namamugi JCT to Daishi Exit is expected to be up to 150 minutes (on weekdays), and President Maeda urged motorists to divert to the Wangan Route or avoid the busiest times.
The current construction progress is up to the assembly of the new bridge and installation of signs and lighting on the downstream side (Step 2), and during the closure period starting tomorrow (27th), the existing bridge will be moved upstream (Step 3) and the new bridge will be erected (Step 4).
After safety checks are completed, the road closure will be lifted at 5:00 a.m. on June 10. After that, the existing bridge will be dismantled and removed, and the project will be completed in FY2025.
President Maeda said, “In many cases, a temporary bridge is built next to a damaged bridge and replaced with a new bridge in the same location. However, the construction period will take several years due to issues related to the protection of the nature of the Tama River and land acquisition. Considering the impact on traffic in the entire Tokyo metropolitan area, various efforts were made to shorten the closure period to two weeks. We understand that this is an unavoidable closure, and we ask for your understanding.
