Signing of Minutes of Discussion on a Technical Cooperation Project for Sri Lanka: Supporting the Establishment of a Sustainable Plastic Waste Management System

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions (R/D) with the Government of the Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka on March 29 in Colombo for the technical cooperation project “Plastics Management Capacity Enhancement Project.

The Sri Lankan government, with the support of UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), IGES-CCET (IGES-UNEP Centre for Environmental Technology), and the Ministry of Environment of Japan, has formulated the National Plastic Waste Management Action Plan (2021-2030) in 2021 to address the global issue of plastic waste. and the establishment of the Plastics Management Center at the Central Environmental Agency of the Ministry of the Environment of Japan.

The project will establish a database and monitoring mechanism for plastic management, develop plans and pilot activities on plastic waste reduction, and train human resources for plastic management centers. Through these activities, the project will contribute to building a sustainable plastic waste management system and strengthening Sri Lanka’s capacity to manage plastic waste, thereby contributing to SDG Goal 9 (Create a foundation for industrial and technological innovation), Goal 11 (Make cities livable), and Goal 12 (Create, use, and (Create Responsibility to Create, Use Responsibility to Use).
