TripAdvisor, Spring 2023 Travel Trends. Domestic favorites are Urayasu, Konohana, and Hakone

TripAdvisor announced travel trends for spring 2023 based on an attitude survey of travelers in five countries, including Japan, and website usage data.

According to the report, 49% of Japanese travelers reported planning to travel between March 1 and May 31, an upward trend compared to 38% for the same period last year. Travel distance was 93% for domestic travel and 7% for international travel, with 42% of respondents traveling “4-6 hours,” 30% “1-3 hours,” and 15% “11 hours or more.

Compared to the expenditures for spring 2022 travel, 4% of respondents said their expenditures for spring 2023 travel would be “very much more than in 2022,” 30% said “a little more than in 2022,” 56% said “same as in 2022,” and 10% said “less than in 2022.” As for the impact of inflation and rising electricity and other energy costs, 41% of respondents said “no change to travel plans” for inflation and 43% for rising energy costs. As for the impact of inflation, 20% said they would “reduce the number or shorten the duration of trips” and 25% said they would “take shorter trips,” while 17% said they would “reduce the number or shorten the duration of trips” and 27% said they would “take shorter trips” due to rising energy costs.

The top 10 most popular tourist destinations in Japan are as follows: Urayasu City, home to the Tokyo Disney Resort, and Konohana-ku, where USJ is located, followed by Hakone Town in Kanagawa Prefecture.
