Project for Capacity Improvement of Integrated Traffic Management Plan and Traffic Control Center Operation and Maintenance in Phnom Penh

In Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, the number of vehicles has increased significantly in recent years due to economic development, and traffic congestion and traffic accidents have become serious on major roads in the center of the city. Under these circumstances, the Government of Japan supported the formulation of an Urban Transport Master Plan for Phnom Penh Metropolitan Administration and established a plan for three major components: improvement of the road network, introduction of public transport, and strengthening of traffic management measures. The introduction of a traffic control system was proposed as one of the short-term priority projects, and grant assistance was provided for the construction of a traffic control center facility and equipment such as traffic signal controllers and intersection signals.

The Phnom Penh Metropolitan Administration, the Phnom Penh Metropolitan Department of Public Works and Transport, and the Traffic Control Center are required to further promote the sustainable and effective use of these facilities and equipment, as well as to improve their information collection, processing, and analysis capabilities.

This cooperation will improve traffic management measures (including traffic safety measures) in Phnom Penh Metropolitan Administration and contribute to the formation of a sustainable urban traffic environment by improving the capacity of traffic management measures, including the operation and maintenance of traffic control systems.
