Dispatch of International Emergency Relief Teams and Medical Teams to Earthquake Damage in the Republic of Turkey (Third Report)

JICA dispatched the second contingent of the International Emergency Relief Team and Medical Team to the earthquake damage in the Republic of Turkey.

Disaster Situation

At 10:17 a.m. Japan time (4:17 a.m. local time) on February 6, an earthquake centered near Kahramanmaraş province in southeastern Turkey has caused a large number of victims, including casualties, and property damage. According to the Disaster and Emergency Situations Agency (AFAD) of the Turkish Ministry of Interior, as of February 22, the death toll stands at 42,310 and 119,450 people have been injured.

Dispatch of International Emergency Relief Teams and Medical Teams

In response to a request from the Republic of Turkey, JICA dispatched a first contingent of 5 members of the International Emergency Relief Team (IERT) on Friday, February 10, a second contingent of 36 members on Sunday, February 12, a third contingent of 28 members on February 14, and a fourth contingent of 6 members on February 15, for a total of 75 members. The team started medical support activities, but since there was still a great need for medical support in the affected areas, the first second team (55 members) was dispatched on February 23 and the second team (9 members) on February 24 to take over the activities of the first team that was currently dispatched. An overview of the second medical team is as follows

(1) The team consists of 64 members in total, including the leader, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical coordinators, logisticians, and operations coordinators.

(2) The second contingent is scheduled to be deployed for a period of two weeks, but the duration of the emergency relief activities will be determined based on local needs.
