Mountainous Areas in Northern and Eastern Japan Expected to Receive Heavy Snowfall Over the Weekend; NEXCO East Japan Urges Installation of Winter Tires

NEXCO East Japan is calling for the installation of winter tires due to a strong cold air flow from the night of December 13 through the fourth week of December, which may bring heavy snowfall mainly in mountainous areas in northern and eastern Japan.

Especially in the Tohoku region and on highways throughout Niigata Prefecture, intermittent snow is expected to continue through the weekend, so it is necessary to check the latest weather and road traffic information. Driving on snow-covered roads with normal tires is against the law, and even one vehicle unable to drive on its own on the expressway may cause long traffic jams and road closures, so drivers are urged to install winter tires and carry tire chains.

In addition, single axle drive vehicles, articulated vehicles, empty loads, and older vehicles tend to be particularly prone to getting stuck on snow-covered roads, etc., so care should be taken.
