Governor Koike: The Tokyo Metropolitan Area to Rinkai Subway “is the backbone that connects the city center to the waterfront area, which attracts people and investment from around the world.

On November 25, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike mentioned the concept of a “metropolitan and waterfront area subway” at a regular press conference.

Governor Koike commented, “The waterfront area is undergoing large-scale development and has the potential to attract people and investment from around the world in the future. This subway line will be a key transportation infrastructure connecting the city center and the waterfront area, and is expected to serve as a “backbone,” so to speak. By enhancing the railroad network in the Bay Area, we will make Tokyo a sustainable city. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has established a study group with the participation of academic experts and the national government to examine the feasibility of the project, and has now finalized a draft of the project plan.

The proposed project plan calls for a line length of approximately 6.1 km, with seven stations: “Tokyo,” “Shin-Ginza,” “Shintochi,” “Kachidoki,” “Harumi,” “Toyosu Market,” and “Ariake/Tokyo Big Sight” (all tentative names).

The governor has stated that further study will be conducted to commercialize the project as soon as possible.
