Montserrado Provincial Health Services project: Improving Capacity through Supervisory Support

In Liberia, the country’s maternal and infant mortality rates are among the lowest in the world as a result of the country’s 15-year civil war that began in 1989 and the spread of Ebola virus disease, which has devastated the health care system and severely deteriorated health and sanitation indicators.

Although Montserrado, where about one-third of the country’s population lives, has better basic infrastructure and medical facilities than other provinces, maternal deaths account for a quarter of all maternal deaths in the country, infant mortality is high, and health and hygiene indicators in the province are not necessarily good. In addition, the state faces challenges in health administration, including delays in the supply of essential medicines, an inadequately functioning health information management system, and a lack of guidance and supervision of health and medical facilities by state and county health departments.

This project will improve MCHT’s operational performance and data/information collection management, enhance PDCA management capacity, build an organizational management framework, and share good practices, thereby achieving improved management capacity of state health departments, which in turn will contribute to improved health services in the state.
